Our History
Established in 1916 in the Kessel area of Hardy County, St. Mary was dedicated on October 29, 1916 and completed in 1918. The priests of St. Anthony Parish, Ridgeley, administered the parish until 1956. A motorvan christened "St. Mary of the Highway" served as chapel for Hardy, Grant, and Pendleton Counties until, in 1956, a house in Petersburg was rented and renovated into a chapel dedicated to "Our Lady of the Valley." Priests from Assumption in Keyser administered the parish. In 1971, St. Mary Parish in Kessel moved to its present site. The first Mass was celebrated on February 22, 1972, and a Solemn Blessing on April 23. St. Mary's became an autonomous parish in 1975.
